Chapter 22
Brett opened the truck door for Gabby, and gave her a hand up as she climbed in. She finished fastening her seatbelt just as he opened the driversâ side and got in.
âHave you been to the Vintage House before?â Brett asked as he started the engine and began driving down the ridge towards Santa Ynez.
âNo, I havenât. Whatâs it like?â
âI guess Iâd describe it as slightly upscale for this neck of the woods, with really good food and wine. Uncle Jack said that he took your mom there one night for dinner.â
âI didnât know that. I donât remember her mentioning that to me. I think sheâs a little self-conscious talking to me about your uncle, probably because she cares about him more than sheâs showing or telling. She might feel odd expressing her feelings about him to me.â
âYeah, I think youâre right. Itâs only been the past couple of weeks that Uncle Jack has opened up to me about his feelings for your mom. I havenât seen him this happy in years, since before my Aunt Tammy got sick.â
âSame here; my mom is almost glowing these days. I am very happy for her, and for your uncle. What are the odds that the two of them would find each other, especially under the circumstances they did?â
Brett smiled at the thought. âProbably about the same odds as me and you finding each other, under the circumstances.â
Gabby chuckled, remembering the day that big, ugly possum had scared her out of her mind, and how Brett had come to her rescue. âI noticed you, and asked my mom about you, that first day I saw you building the walkway.â
He smiled at her, acknowledging her comment, and remembered that first day he had lain eyes on her, and what a vision of beauty she had been. He thought back to the amazing way she had made him feel, and about the fact that she still made him feel that way.
âBut,â Gabby continued, âit wasnât until I felt your strong arms carrying me to safety that I really, truly noticed you. You were so calm and understanding. I donât think Iâll ever forget that moment.â
Brettâs heart melted as she described the possum incident from her point of view. âI donât think Iâll ever forget that moment, either.â
They talked and laughed their way down the ridge road, and into Santa Ynez. âThere it is.â Brett pointed out the restaurant as he parked the truck, then went around to the passenger-side door and helped her out. âYou look as pretty as a picture, and sexy, too, in your skirt and high heels.â And then he kissed her, and she kissed him back. It was a real kiss, with all the true emotion that went along with it.
When Gabby opened her eyes, they embraced for a minute longer before walking to the restaurant. Being with Brett felt so comfortable. He was so easily pleased and didnât need clever conversation or name-dropping, or the latest fashion, like so many of the men in Los Angeles.
